Prosperity Gospel

I have little use for the prosperity gospel shouted across the face of the earth by televangelists. The false promise of health and wealth in exchange for following Jesus is not reality.

Nor is it realistic to think I can obey Jesus and my life’s experience will be plotted on a success chart with the line always going up and to the right.

In vivid contrast—neither is it true that I must wait for the restored garden to experience the fruit of following Jesus.

The truer picture takes me back to green grass with occasional mounds of fire ants and the natural attraction of wasps and bees to red roses.

As I live in Christ, following the will of God, I do for a fact walk on earth among the sweet smell of roses and over cushiony, manicured, green grass. The grass is soft and pleasant. I can take off my shoes and feel as if I am walking on God’s carpet.

I experience the grass and roses because in Jesus I find a tranquility of knowing who I am in contrast to who He is—and it is OK. I live without guilt because Jesus covers my imperfections before the face of God.

In following Jesus, I avoid the self-destructive pain brought on by the chase of frivolity and serving the god of self. Thus, I escape living among weeds that grow above my head and hinder my sight of God’s trail.

Deep and enriching human relationships are mine with like-hearted pilgrims who also follow God’s way. These people—like me, far from perfect—allow my anxiety thermostat to be set low as I recognize we are followers of God and not judges of our fellow travelers.

Sure, I still experience the thorns and fire ants as the yet-to-be restored garden brings me into contact with sudden death, chronic illness, disappointment, and discouragement.

I know Satan is loose and always stands ready for opportunities to attack with his bag of explosives. The bad bombs he constantly drops in my path let me know he is still dedicated to destruction and to his work of terrorism aimed toward God and good.

Even as destructive as these attacks are—since God lives inside of me—all will be OK. I know the end of the story.

God’s restored garden awaits me with plush green grass and the sweet fragrance of roses. Best of all, the fire ants and the thorns will be no more.

Do share your reflections and stay tuned. – Gary Sorrells
