In the “Not So Unbelievable” category, another vote is in. The most requested funeral song for 2012 is Frank Sinatra’s rendition of “My Way.” In Britain, it hit the top of the funeral songs charts for the seventh year.
Not exactly a God-Reflective song.
The last verse sums up life dedicated to self:
For what is man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels and not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows and did it my way!
Yes, it was my way
I pray God would never accept “My Way” as a testimonial summary of my life.
Unfortunately, at times I hum “My Way.” The tune always brings trouble. God did not create me to march to such a lyric.
Scripture is replete with examples of “My Way.” The descendants of Adam sung it for generations. The neighbors of Noah sung it until their lungs filled with water. The Israelites belted it out in a loud chorus to God and the prophets. Pilot and the religious leaders sang it at the foot of the cross.
As I move nearer to God’s restored garden, may the verses of the song recede farther into the recesses of my mind. May it be a tune heard less and less on my lips. May it never come from the heart I want to present to Creator God.
I want to concentrate on living guilt-free as his restored son. I want to be who God created me to be. I want to celebrate Jesus’ refusal to sing the song in Gethsemane. Rather he chose the words not my way but your way.
I want to sing the new song, “God’s Way:”
For what is man, what has he got?
Without God, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels to the Father before whom he kneels
The record shows Jesus took the blows and did it God’s way!
Yes, it was God’s way
Yes, as my last breath sings God’s version, the garden will await.
What are your reflections? Will you sing with me? – Gary Sorrells
