Mysterious God

I worship a mysterious God.

Where did God come from? Why does He need Angels? How could the “I Am who I Am,” possibly need a human friend? Why doesn’t God overcome Satan now? Is it going to take God forever to restore the garden? How could He possibly need me? How can God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit be the same while being three distinct members of the Godhead?

I will stop before my mind blows a fuse.

I do wonder how many pages I could fill asking questions that crossed my mind through the decades concerning the mysterious God I worship. It sounds strange but I am a believer—even with the mystery. In my most reflective moments as I attempt to strip my soul of all pretence, my ultimate trust is in this mysterious God.

How can that possibly be?

The-Helix-NebulaAs I read the Old Testament Scripture, God gives me a glimpse—ever so slightly—into His character, His power, His jealousy, and the love He sustains for His creation. Jesus arrives on planet earth and demonstrates His faultless character and astounding love. His life shines brightly on the God of mystery. Jesus’ claim, “if you see Me, you see the Father,” adds to my knowledge of my God of mystery.

I see Jesus loving, caring, forgiving, healing, and showing mercy.

The researcher Jim Collins taught me the value of being able to hold two paradoxical thoughts in my mind at the same time. In this instance, I cannot explain the mystery but I see enough evidence to allow the mystery to stand while seeing enough clarity through Jesus’ life to cause my belief.

I think that is faith.

At least, that is where I stand.

Stay tuned. – Gary J. Sorrells
