Sometimes I reflect on the Acts 2 account when church began. Rushing sound—Holy Spirit fire—powerful preaching—mob repentance—3000 baptisms—and people were saved.
Rather impressive for a start-up church don’t you think?
Even more inspiring is the church today resulting from believers—like those first 3000—who through the centuries did their best to be Jesus in their world and to tell the story.
Their story was a simple tale of lost and found.
This past Sunday a new thought entered my mind. Can I comprehend the enormity of God’s church today?
There is no bandwidth broad enough to handle the data of daily deeds generated on the behalf of others by believers across the face of the globe.
The Saint News Daily of birth, life, and death, is so voluminous only the Godhead can read the entirety.
Christ followers across the globe quick-started response initiatives this week in face of the “Mother of all Typhoons,” that killed thousands in the Philippines and left hundreds of thousands hungry and homeless.
God’s church operates hospitals, homes, and not-for-profit organizations around the world to care for the hurting, the sick, and the disenfranchised. It’s an around the clock operation.
After a week of being Jesus and telling the story, believers gather on the first day of each week in a worldwide symphony of prayer, praise, and proclamation. Only the Trinity can process the volume of gratitude and need that flows toward heaven through an act we call prayer.
The Godhead alone can handle such massive adoration. The day of corporate worship has no equal when it comes to spiritual batteries recharged from hearing the Word of God proclaimed.
The sheer size and effect of God’s church is beyond what my brain can imagine. As God promised Jeremiah, the numbers are countless as the stars of the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore. God’s servants and the amount of leaven produced through them is so vast only the Godhead can comprehend the enormity.
Starting with that first group of 3000 believers the Holy Spirit of God still empowers Christ followers to allow Jesus to touch the world. Each day brings new doors to tell the story to thirsty listeners.
I thank Him that through His grace I join with countless believers who attempt to be Jesus before others as we travel through life telling the story. It is at this level I walk in unity with fellow sons and daughters of God across the face of our globe and across the face of time.
Stay tuned.
