Power of Belief

GodReflection: Power Words

aboutBelief is not always right.

There was a time in history when a majority of people held the view of belief7a flat earth. The fear of an amateur adventurer was the possibility of going too far toward the horizon, could result in falling off the edge of the earth. (The unknown still provokes fear.)

The belief of the flat earth society was wrong. Yet, to a great extent belief—even misguided belief—guided the people’s actions.

My Anthropology professor, Dr. R. made a lasting impression on me. What caught my attention was his dedication to a theory that he couldn’t prove. His belief was his guide.

On the first day of classed he identified God as a myth of the misguided. He set the stage for the study of man by declaring God to be a scientific impossibility. The design of the course was to study our protozoan origin and humankind’s ape ancestral development.

The brilliant professor spoke five languages and could read an additional seventeen. He guided his life by his belief—misguided as it was.

Belief also powers my life. I suspect that to be true of every person who walks the face of earth.

belief2The belief direction on the compass of my life needle will determine my destiny. My primary concern at this stage is to arrive home. It matters which way the needle points.

The Apostle John wrote a Gospel of 21 chapters with one purpose in mind. He set out to create belief in Jesus. Belief in Jesus is the thread tying together all 21 chapters. The compass needle points north to Jesus. All direction is determined from him. I listen to John’s summary statement:

Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

I don’t want my belief to point in any direction but Jesus.

It seems to me that what matters is to believe in Jesus. I can hold a bundle of wrong belief9opinions as long as I am right on whom I place my belief.

There is power in belief. Belief focused on Jesus is a power word of God. Any belief that guides my life that doesn’t align with Jesus makes belief a power word of Satan.

I want to believe that I may have life in his name.

Stay tuned.
