The Power of Agreement

GodReflection: Power Words

garyguarujaWhen I declared: “I’m in” and surfaced from baptismal waters to walk with Jesus we made an agreement. My guess is it is more accurate to say the seed of an agreement went into heart soil.

I believed Jesus is the Son of God.

I was young and desired eternal salvation. Certainly, salvation sounded better than the alternative of forever fire and brimstone smoldering around my knees.

Most likely, my part of the agreement was rather weak.

In the beginning, I heard the call of Jesus and started to chart my course. At least, I thought at the time the steps were in my control. I knew I made the plans but was unaware the Lord directed my steps.

agreement8Here is what I continue to learn about our agreement.

My part of the agreement is to trust. His part of the agreement is eternal care.

His side of the agreement started when I declared allegiance to His son.

I suspect He was watching after me from the beginning. God didn’t grow into His part of our agreement. His full assurance existed prior to His ink drying on the contract.

His gift of eternal care was immediate.

agreement3My signature on the contract showed pale ink and a shaky hand. No handwriting expert would judge confidence in the faint unsteady letters that spelled out my name.

Here’s what I think happened over the years as I tested His agreement. From baby steps to a more confident gait, I would step toward His agreement of care.  Each time He honored our contract.

Seldom does His care seem immediate. There is no second guessing His Rolex or His Day Planner. All actions of eternal care fall within God time. His time zone I can’t understand. His clock doesn’t seem to have a second hand. I don’t have the foggiest notion of how God time works. I can’t plan for it.

All I can do is trust.

He honors His agreement of eternal care each time I step into the unknown. It is in the act of rolling my clay pot toward the faith cliff repeatedly that I grow in my assurance of His trustworthy signature on our agreement.

The farther I walk down life’s trail the more I find “agreement” evolves into a word of power.

agreement1I remember God’s promise of His eternal care. I remember I agreed to trust Him and His risen son to provide. It is out of that agreement I find that I walk with a calmer assurance through life.

Our agreement becomes a precious possession.

Have you signed that agreement with God? Perhaps you should do so while you still have ink in your pen.

Stay tuned.

    1. Jane,
I appreciate you comment. I am discovering what should have always been obvious to me all along. Followers of Jesus use a power driven vocabulary unknown to those who attempt to live outside of the Lord.
