Meek Gets a Bad Rap

GodReflection: Power Words

garyguarujaMeek gets a bad rap in the English language.

When I checked with Sister Merriam and Brother Webster I saw ‘meek’ defined both as strength and as a deficiency.

Since Jesus declared, “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth,” I want to get this one right. I want to know the power of meek.

I get the feeling meekness is anything but weakness.

meek9When Jesus painted a portrait of blessed people, he included the meek with the poor in spirit, those who mourn those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, and the pure in heart, the peacemakers, and the persecuted because of righteousness, the insulted, and those targeted falsely by all kinds of evil accusations “because of me.”

It doesn’t take too many times around the block to figure out such traits don’t come about by weakness. Sounds like I need to elevate ‘meek’ to a greater place of power in my vocabulary.

I cannot help but remember the hymn by G. R. Prynne written in 1856. It resides in my memory bank since childhood.

meek6Jesus, meek and gentle, son of God most high, gracious, loving Savior, hear thy children’s cry.Pardon our offenses, loose our captive chains; break down every idol, which our soul detains.Give us holy freedom, fill our hearts with love; draw us, holy Jesus, to the realms above. Lead us on our journey; be thyself the way through our earthly darkness to the heavenly day.Jesus, meek and gentle, Son of God most high, gracious, loving Savior, hear thy children’s cry.

I look to Jesus for meek’s definition.

Meek Jesus showed courage to dine with and be a presence in the lives of those who needed him. Meek Jesus demonstrated patience to disciples who struggled to believe. Meek Jesus lived with rejection but without resentment.

Meek Jesus gave disenfranchised women respect and place when the flow of society and culture failed to understand.

meek4Meek Jesus ministered to the sick, those that hurt, and those that bereaved loss. He was never afraid to enter into another’s pain.

Meek Jesus found fuel in love and relationship with God the Father. Meek Jesus trusted God even though he knew the cross lay ahead.

Meek Jesus showed the courage to bear the unfathomable load of all sin since Adam and Eve.

meek3My life on earth makes sense through an encounter with Jesus. I am a member of the Kingdom of God on earth. It is God’s earth. I am his child. As a child of God and a brother of Jesus, I join with them in the family business of earth.

The mission of the family business is to be the window that allows the Holy to shine through to the lives of all whom I encounter on our planet. I am to grow relationship with God. I am to help everyone in my path join in the same venture.

I am to enjoy God’s earth as my temporary home. I inherit it as a child of my Father.

Meek living isn’t for wimps. It is for the God powered.

Stay tune.
