GodReflection: Power Words

It wasn’t until 1939 that the world discovered for the first time, “Superman’s X-ray eyesight.”

What a guy!

With blue pajamas and his red cape—this hero had the ultimate in eyes—he could see through walls.

Jesus upstaged Clark Kent. Jesus saw through hearts.

It is the combined fact of Jesus being fully God and living as fully man that makes him Savior.

His life in Galilee was lived in the city streets, the small towns, and the dusty roads of Galilee and Judea. He lived a grand mission—to show humankind the heart of God. Jesus saw God’s heart.

I’ll readily admit my lack of ability to wrap my mind around the reality of fully God and fully man.

As the son of Mary, he was human. Like any child, I suspect he possessed certain features of his mother. Perhaps he shared the same features as the bridge of her nose. Possibly, his grin was unmistakably the smile of Mary. Surely, the residents of Nazareth recognized similarities of son to mother.

As the son of God, he was divine. He resembled his Father. He has God’s strong heart. He inherited God’s eyes. I see the man Jesus entirely human with a divine heart connected to God and with eyes to see as God sees.

His eyes allowed him to see human need. His eyes saw directly into human hearts. Those he discovered who had fertile hearts for God he assisted in their connection to the heart of God.

I recognize the Father in the Son.

Here is what I am starting to understand.

Jesus lives in me through his Holy Spirit. If I can only get my eyes off myself, they will morph into eyes that see as Jesus sees. My eyes make the connection of my heart with God’s heart in that act.

Immediately, I begin to feel direction to my walk. I start to see through the eyes of Jesus.

I notice ways to encourage. I am more thoughtful in the choice of my words. I begin to see ways and places where I can be Jesus to others.

The word ‘eyes’ becomes a power word for my walk.

Dear God, Each morning as I awake let me wash the sleep from my eyes and immediately give them to you as a daily offering. May they transform into the eyes of Jesus guided by his Holy Spirit. Once they see, give me the courage to be his hands, his feet, and his heart to bring light to my fellow travelers. Through Jesus, I pray. Amen.
