Sing is Worship When it Flows from the Heart

GodReflection: Power Words

Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; – Psalms 95:6

garyguarujaScripture describes soul as heart, mind, and body. God uses heart to describe the residential address of my essence.

I would argue that I cannot submit my mind, or body to God without first the gift of my heart.

Heart is the only gift I can give to God.

God has a gift for me. It is free grace. I can’t buy it. It’s not for sale. Nor is it cheap. Its cost to God was more than my little mind can comprehend.

God offers His grace to me free of charge is the good news. To receive it—in the ultimate act of appreciation—I offer Jesus my heart as the receptacle of the gift.

heart4Whatever I offer of worth to the Godhead only can come from my heart.

With its fill of grace—my worship response gushes from heart to heaven.

One manifestation of grateful worship is song.

To sing is to worship—but only when the song flows from my heart.

Since the tragic Civil War, the church in the USA continues in civil war over singing.

The focus of the strife is on the how rather than on the heart.

Here is what I think.

The issue with God is the heart rather than the how.

heart9To sing is an expression from the heart. The issue is not whether I sing base, tenor, alto, or soprano. Nor is the issue one of keeping time with two wooden pencils on a steel pan, or not. I am an arrogant disobedient child when I judge the heart and worship of any of God’s children.

The issue is the grateful heart—my heart is my issue.

If I can grasp this one truth, I can lay down my Satanic weapons and stop my irrelevant participation in the worship wars.

I have had countless occasions to enter CT scanners and MRI machines for reasons I will not take time here to explore. There’s only room inside of the confining tube for me and my thoughts.

heart7Each time I pass on the offer of headphones where I can listen to the radio station of my choice or the music genre of my preference. Here’s why.

I grew up in a singing church. I easily know by heart an hour’s worth of songs and their melody. Since worship flows from the heart, I can worship for an hour through words set to mental music without uttering a sound. The instrument is the heart rather than the voice.

Prior to this post, I reread the one hundred plus verses in Scripture that deal with worship of the Almighty through song.

The Apostle Paul supports the other writings when he captures for the Ephesian Christ followers the fundamental nature of life walk and the worship of God through song:

Be very careful  how you live—not as unwise but as wise . . . understand what the Lord’s will is . . . be filled with the Spirit speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

heart8To live as a grace recipient of Jesus the power word turns out to be heart.

For if my heart is right, then worship is a 24/7 walk. From my walking heart flows singing in my car, in CT Scanners, and in corporate worship. Such singing explodes in worship from the heart. When it flows from the heart worship to God through song is always right.

Stay tuned.
