As a Debtor – I Worship

GodReflection: Power Words

Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; – Psalms 95:6

garyguarujaThe gift was $25,000. I’ve never gotten over that specific act of generosity.

It was during my “working life.”

Through a series of family medical mishaps and a minimal income as director of a startup non-profit mission agency money was unbelievably tight.

debtor4Over the telephone, a friend told of the decision of him and his wife to send the bountiful monetary gift.

The gift took me by surprise.

In the spirit of the song, I owed debts I could not pay and through their gift of love they paid my debts they did not owe.

All these years later as a grateful debtor I am still touch by their liberal gift.

I’m an indebted debtor.

debtor1In Elementary School often a teacher would assign me to spend my weekends writing the sentence “I will not talk in class unless called upon by my teacher,” filling page after page of my Big Chief Tablet.

The thought occurs to me I could fill page after page of a Big Chief Tablet recording gifts and blessings sent my way by God.

Major headings would be family, friends, church, teachers, schools, meaningful work, material blessings, good co-workers, health, abilities, and mentors.

These debts of love and generosity I can never repay. I am a debtor in an enormous sense.

Father Adam and Mother Eve gave birth to me as one wired to sin. To be human is to be a sinner. To be human is to die. To be human is to be lost. To be human is to live in hopelessness.

Then it happens. Perfect God enters the world as man Jesus. Through his suffering, his death, his burial and his resurrection, sinless Jesus pays for my sin.

Jesus gift to me bore a cost to God that is beyond my comprehension.

Upon acceptance of the gift, my label as sinner changes to saved. Death becomes life. Lost transforms into gain. Hopelessness gives way to hope.

Jesus paid my debt that he never owed.

debtor5My sin debt was impossible for me to pay. Only Jesus can cover the debt of sin. His act places me within the class of the greatest of debtors.

His payment of love and generosity I can never repay. I am a debtor in the ultimate sense.

So debtor carries great significance as a power word calling me to 24/7 worship. I worship God for the gift of Jesus and I worship God for my Big Chief Tablet of blessings.

I am a debtor indebted to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in more ways than I can possibly understand.

Stay tuned.
