Daily is Key to Connection

GodReflection: Power Words

garyguarujaThere is something intense and intentional about ‘daily.’

I’ll get back to that thought in a moment.

The Apollo Space Program took place in my early adult years. The design of the Apollo program was to land humans on the Moon and bring them safely back to Earth.

daily11Six of the 17 missions did in fact place men on the moon and return them safely to earth. I will always remember the excitement of the Apollo 11 mission to place the first men on the moon and the thrill of the words, “The Eagle has landed.”

By the time Apollo 17 landed the last crew on the moon’s surface people on earth were yawning in boredom. The impossible became commonplace.

I see a parallel in the Church.

It began with the reality of the impossible—the risen Jesus.

Upon recognition that acceptance of Jesus’ sacrifice equated to life the thrill of the discovery was unparalleled.

dailyDaily is the descriptor Luke uses to describe the disciples’ newly acquired power source. Teaching was daily. Fellowship was daily. Prayer was daily. Joint meals were daily.

Remembrance of the Lord through the symbols of wine and bread was daily. Needs assessment of the saints and fulfillment was daily. Worship was daily. Salvation of fellow sinners was daily.

With the passing of time, newness wore off and over the centuries people started to yawn.

Here I stand 723 thousand-plus days later challenged to reclaim the significance of the death and resurrection of Jesus. Here I stand as I make an effort to trust this God-man with my life.

daily16I don’t want to yawn.

It is in this context that ‘daily’ comes into focus as a word of power. The words of Jesus still make sense in the 21st century,Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

I find that Jesus teaches me to knock on the door of heaven with my request: Give us each day our daily bread. I suspect Jesus didn’t have wheat in mind.

daily2I need daily sustenance from God in order to have strength to carry daily the cross.

As daily bread comes from Father God, I want to find enough nourishment to trust Him once again for today.

I too long for the excitement the first century Christians found in the faith. They show me the way. It comes from a direct connection into the power source Jesus.

Daily becomes the key to the inspection of my connection.

Stay tuned.
