GodReflection: Power Words
Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; – Psalms 95:6
God is greater than my vocabulary can express.
Humankind has searched recesses of the mind for the vocabulary to adequately describe and address Creator God.
At some point, I must stop and agree with Dietrich Bonheoffer’s essay on The Talk of Human Limits, where he suggests there becomes a moment of truth where: “At the limits it seems better to me to remain silent and leave the unsolvable unsolved.”
It is not easy to describe the Eternal.
A word in the English language that resonates with me is Almighty.
Almighty is a bold word. I think of ALL power as I think of Almighty.
Supreme, absolute, eternal, and everlasting are within the Almighty gene. The Almighty includes the ‘omni’ words omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient.
I include the divine words of Father, God, Holy, Lord, and Spirit. The Almighty is Maker and Creator.
The Almighty IS.
Here’s what I think.
It is difficult for Almighty to become a power word in my life without the combination of awareness and worship.
I struggle to grasp even a minimal understanding of the “God Descriptors.”
A great mystery of Scripture is God’s love for humankind—a love beyond description—that flows from the Creator.
God’s redemptive love for each individual is the story line of Scripture. His love cries out as an expression of His personal concern for each individual. How He wants everyone to receive His gift of grace.
His heart breaks when the gift is rejected and the package remains unopened.
He gave His son in sacrifice in hope that I would latch onto the gift.
For reasons beyond my human comprehension, God wants me to live with Him forever—beginning now.
When the story line of Scripture weaves in the descriptors of the Almighty, the result is worship.
My worship flows from my increased awareness of the Almighty.
How is it possible that God Almighty—the one who defies description—offers sacrificial love to me?
When this awareness stand front and center of my heart then worship directed toward the Almighty is an automatic response.
How about ‘Almighty’ for a word of power?
