GodReflection: God Breaks In Mondays
I’ve placed my hope in a baby.
It’s crazy I know.
An angel appeared and announced his birth to shepherds in the field while caring for sheep.
Crazier yet, I believe the story that a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven . . . .”
It’s not just any baby. This one was poor.
Born to poor parents he opened his eyes for the very first time clothed in rags, lying on straw in a feeding trough. His welcome into the world took place in a barn.
His early childhood was as a migrant alien in a strange country. My guess is that he and his parents weren’t all that welcome since they were a family of foreigners.
The borders open for a safe return to his own country. Of all the places in the world, he moved to the town of Nazareth. It was a nothing town—no prestige—no wealth—no influence—no hope.
The people of the nation were in total agreement with the question asked years later by a contemporary of the baby, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
My Father was a carpenter. This baby grew up as the son of a carpenter. I like that.
He knew what it was like to swing the hammer and hit the nail on his hand rather than the nail held by his thumb and index finger.
He grew to know pain and hard work. Since our fathers were carpenters, I like to think he understands some of my unique quirks.
Of all things—I place my trust in a baby who grew up as a woodworker.
This was a special baby.
He was God who soiled his diapers. He was God who cried with colic. He was God who longed for the touch of his mother. He was God who basked in the love of father and mother.
This baby was God who broke into earth’s story to experience every emotion and every hurt that I encounter.
He felt the full barrage of Satan’s weapons. This baby came to handle it all on my behalf.
As crazy as it may seem, I place my trust in a poor little manger baby who came as God into my world.
Rather incredible—don’t you think?
Stay tuned.
