GodReflection: Power Word Wednesday
Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God . . . .Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise (Ephesians 5 :1&15).
I know nothing about Power Walking as an organized sport.
The best I can tell it seems to date back to the mid 1800’s. All I know is that I am no power walker.
I’m the one with short legs who always fell out of sight on back packing fishing trips and on Scout hikes. My trail companions took their long and natural stride without a thought as to my reason for falling far behind.
Back to the sport of Power Walking—I like to watch OTHERS test their speed and endurance. They walk with intensity and determination. The goal is to get better with each outing as they look to finishing the race
with success.
I like the concept of walk as a description of my journey through life. I don’t want to run through life neither do I desire to spend life at the rest stop.
When I run, my eyes focus on the trail directly in front of me to prevent a fall. Concentration on what is happening around my feet causes me to miss God. I miss the Creator when I run through life.
Likewise, to spend my walk through life resting on a rock results in missed vistas God has waiting for me down the trail.
Unlike back packing and Scout hikes, I like the knowledge that my power comes from the Holy Spirit rather than granola bars.
I read of Enoch, Noah, Abraham, and Isaac, who walked faithfully with God. Jacob used the metaphor of a shepherd walking with his sheep as he blessed Joseph and affirmed God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day.
David, in the famed Psalms 23, spoke with confidence as he described his steps with God.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Jesus affirmed he provides light for my walk with assurance that if I set my pace in his company I will never be in darkness since my walk is covered by the light of life (John 8:12).
Both the apostles Paul and John remind me to walk by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16) and that my walk in the light with Jesus provide me with confidence that the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies [me] from all sin (1 John 1:17).
So God provides me with “walk” as a word of power. Walk power comes when I plug into the power of the Spirit.
However, the most exciting reality is when I take my eyes from my feet and walk by faith rather than by sight.
It is only by eyes raised toward the horizon that I begin to catch glimpses of God that I would never see had I relied upon my own footing.
If I walk in the company of Jesus now I can walk under the same promise of Jesus to submissive members of the Asian church in Sardis: they will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy.
To walk powered by the Spirit turns out to be a robust word of power, don’t you think?
Stay tuned.
