GodReflection: God Breaks In Monday
For over two thousand years the church has honored a worthy tradition.
There is no commandment, no chapter and verse.
The church elevated Sunday to a day of the week with special significance. Quickly it became known among disciples as the Lord’s Day.
It was on a Sunday morning when God broke into resurrection. It was Sunday when
Jesus demonstrated that he overcame death and made possible the reality of eternal life.
I suspect it just seemed to be the obvious and appropriate act for the New Testament church to celebrate the resurrected Jesus on Sunday.
Sunday was forever set apart as the day of the week when the Christ broke free from death and tomb.
From the resurrection forward—convicted by the cosmic importance of the event when God broke into history to redeem what Satan stole—the church elevated Sunday above
the other six.
The New Testament refers twice to Sunday as a time when followers met as the church. On neither occasion was Sunday the primary topic.
The third time New Testament writings mention Sunday was at the end of the apostle John’s life when Jesus revealed to him what the church was to expect about its trajectory toward his return. John tells us this vision took place on the Lord’s Day.
Holy God and His Son Jesus are worthy of worship 24/7.
Anytime God’s children assemble to honor, praise, and show gratitude to the Father is good and legitimate.
However, I’m still grateful to be a recipient of a two-thousand year tradition of the celebration of Sunday as the Lord’s Day.
Sunday church is a good calendar point to be reminded that God broke into a tomb and raised His Son to eternal life so that I can live my eternity in their presence don’t you think?
Stay tuned.
