GodReflection: Tenacious Trust
Because of my own environment and training it never occurred to me to doubt God’s role in creation. Through the years I learned that Son and Spirit were also Divine participants.
My one serious thought that maybe I had been duped came in a cultural anthropology course at my local university near the end of a four-year Bible degree at another university.
It was my first anthropology course. The professor was brilliant. As I recall, He spoke five languages and could read another dozen plus. He trained at Yale and other top universities. He had written more books, conducted more research projects, and traveled and work in more place than I even knew existed.
He began his class with ridicule and disdain of anyone naïve enough to believe in God. Class after class he made his case.
Class after class I left with my head in a spin and questions about my own faith engaged my mind. Does this brilliant man have it figured out? Had I been misled my entire life?
All these years later I still stand in wonder at how someone can have such a keen mind in so many areas, live within creation daily and their very eyes never see the Creator.
Under Holy inspiration the Apostle Paul writes these words in the introduction of his letter to first century Christian residents of Rome.
. . . since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
Not that God needs my endorsement, but I would say He puts on a rather impressive daily display to illustrate His creative power.
Even living in a major metropolitan area with north of six million people, my wife and I are blessed to have a home with a small amount of green space.
She has a wonderful appreciation for greenery and unlike her husband—who can recognize a rose—she knows the name of every plant and flower that populate our soil.
Although, my plant and animal life dictionary is limited, I cannot miss the unlimited diversity found with each plant, leaf, and flower.
We placed a birdbath and feeder just outside my writing window. Each day I witness a wonderful array of cardinals, doves, mocking birds, blue jays, finches, and sparrows. Even within the same species no two possess identical markings. Just another daily canvas painted by the Creator.
Here is my point. No matter the highs or lows of my day creation stands as a constant reminder of the Divine all about me. I only have to open my eyes.
The God who cares daily for His creation cares daily for me.
If I can trust Him with the sun, moon, stars, and the sustenance of the planet where I live, is it too much to trust Him with my care?
Through the years I’ve witnessed God’s world day after day.
I now see creation as a solid brick in the foundation of the development of a lifestyle of tenacious trust.
I suspect we would all profit to spend more time in thought about the role creation plays in our faith—don’t you think?
Stay tuned.
