Do I Live with Holy Angels?

GodReflection: Life in the Holy Presence

garyguarujaAngels aren’t little fat, chubby figures. Nor are they the cute figurines found on jewelry boxes and in fairy tales.

Throughout Scripture and in my walk through life I encounter the Holy presence in stories and experience.

Whereas I’ve experience God, Jesus and Spirit, my awareness of angels is limited to Scripture.

angels1As far as I know I’ve never seen an angel. Truth is I probably don’t need to be on the lookout for the angelic. However, if God used or uses angels at His discretion on my behalf—or to help another—I can only be thankful.

In Scripture angels are messengers of God that appeared at key points from Genesis through Revelation to carry out God’s instructions. They can administer justice, render aid or share a message at God’s command.

It is a one-way relationship. They serve and worship God. God does not worship them. We humans don’t worship or invoke angels for consideration or privilege. Jesus is our way to God not the angels.

Yet, the angels do have a role in God’s story.

God sent an angel ahead of the people of Israel in the Exodus account to clear out their enemies for the tribes to begin their conquest. The angel played a preparatory role. Whatever he did was under the name and the authority of God (Exodus 14:19 and 23:20-23.)

According to the Hebrew author they continue to watch out after God’s people:

Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation (Hebrews 1:14)? Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it (Hebrews 13:2.)

angels3Could be another reason to reflect Jesus in my walk. I suppose it is possible to minister to angels without my being aware of their identity.

On occasions in both Old and New Testaments angels seems to have taken on human appearance at times for their service role. There were instances when full recognition was realized only after the encounter.

On two different occasions in two different places people I know and trust have related the same story.

In each case horrible highway auto accident took place that involved roll overs leaving automobile in mangled masses of wreckage and passengers trapped inside while others were ejected.

Both cases reported a stranger who ministered to those on the scene prior to the arrival of authorities and who was not witnessed by others. In each of these separated cases those who received the aid raised the possibility of Angel care.

Why should I question their experience and their conclusions? These stories seem consistent with God’s revealed Word. They are certainly in line with God’s eternal presence as the Creator who is not limited by time or space and can aid His children in ways no human mind can comprehend.

Do I consider the two stories to be proof positive of angel care? Probably not. However, I find it an intriguing possibility.

Scripture assures me that my citizenship is in the city of the living God along with “myriads of angels” (Hebrews 12:22.)

What about it? Is it ok for me to assume that I live with Holy Angels both now and may even get an introduction to Gabriel in the next reality?

Do you have any angel stories?

Stay tuned.
