GodReflection: Faith Certainties
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1
After the Hebrew writer defines faith as confidence and assurance he follows with a rather lengthy list of actions and truths based upon the certainty of faith.
The first truth is:
By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible (Hebrews 11:3).
I haven’t a clue about the specifics that happened when God gave the formation command. I take the writer at face value. I understand it as a certainty that God made the universe from the invisible. He is God.
I’m not a scientist. However, I see science as a friend. As a disciple of Jesus I have nothing to fear from science.
Mr. Webster defines science as the study of the natural world based on facts learned through experiments and observation.
Most every convenience I enjoy in life results from someone who created a product based on facts learned through experiments and observations of the natural world.
The product from the rubber tree used in experiments and observation provides tires and a gazillion other objects.
To understand the natural world and how to use it for the benefit of the human race it is necessary to test theories as to their validity. Thus by its very nature science works with theories.
When a theory proves wrong it is discarded and science moves on to test a new hypothesis.
Scientists have their theories as to the beginning of the universe. Probably the most popular theory is the Big Bang Theory that suggests it all began as an explosion 13.8 billion years ago. It is a theory.
I have no problem with their continued study of the origin. Whatever might or might not be proven will not invalidate the Hebrews 11:3 statement.
I find it a faith builder to think that the God I attempt to serve is so powerful that He isn’t limited by time or matter. He can take the unseen or the non-existent and from it make something that is visible and so complex that only He can comprehend it.
Over the next several post I will look at other certainties that a God who can make something from nothing makes available to me as I embrace the walk by faith.
Stay tuned.
