My Soul’s Greatest Need

GodReflection:Is It Well with My Soul?

Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you (John 14: 19-20).

gary-portraitIn recent posts I’ve shared four tags of Soul Showers, Soul Walk, Soul Talk, and Soul Music as aids that help me with nutrition for my soul. It occurs to me I need to address The Who that is foundational to all soul nutrition.

The truth is my role in soul care and nurture is minimal when compared to the Holy at work on my behalf.

I mentioned in my last post that old songs from the past frequently knock on the door of my soul and drop in for a visit. One of those old friends arrived to remind me how we sang in our best poetic King James English:

savior6Soul a Savior thou art needing. Soul a Savior waits for thee. Hear His words of tender pleading. Hear His gracious “Come to Me.”

He has died for thy transgressions. If thou wilt, thou canst be free. Soul He waits for thy confession, “Savior, I will go to Thee.

He is calling, softly calling. On thine ear His voice is falling. He is calling, softly calling, “Come to Me and be at rest.”

savior2I’ve just finished an old fifteenth century Spaniard churchman’s book Dark Night of the Soul. Boldly, against the will of the church of his time John of the Cross translated what our Bibles include in the Old Testament as the Song of Songs or the Song of Solomon from Latin into Spanish.

Throughout the Dark Night of the Soul he makes a strong case for the Song of Songs to be God’s description of His Holy care of the soul once we submitted our lives to Him. Through the dark night (hidden in faith from my sight) the soul journeys from the present until the next reality. All along the way God continues to care for and to nurture my soul’s transformation.

Could it be that the Song of Songs was written almost one thousand years prior to the Christ child to give a preview of the role Jesus the Son and His Holy Spirit would play to feed my soul?

I think of a command of Holy God through the prophet Jeremiah:

This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls (Jeremiah 6:16).

savior9Then hundreds of years later Jesus The Way (John 14:6) arrives to connect my soul to Holy Solar Power.  As The Way the Eternal Son is the Holy Solar Panel that powers my soul. His invitation is:

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls (Matthew 11:29).

So here is where I think I am. Yes, I plan to continue to make my limited human efforts to feed my soul. However, I hope to be more at peace in the reality that I am indwelt by the Spirit of the Father and the Son Jesus the Savior who supply my soul’s greatest need. Maybe I should get some rest with the knowledge that The Who is in charge.

Stay tuned.
