GodReflection:
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God—For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. – Jesus
Have you ever thought about it? We have two hearts. Both are vital organs. One keeps our body alive across our earthly walk. The other keeps our soul alive in the present and in the eternal. Should either become diseased we die.
My eternal heart is of primary concern to the Holy. God created it for our present and for our eternity. Jesus cleansed it. The Holy Spirit resides within it.
Jesus came to live among us on earth and taught us that our eternal heart is our most vital organ. He sent us his Holy Spirit for The Son’s invisible presence to live inside us day and night. The one thing we want to get right is our eternal heart so that we can access his living presence.
That brings me to the subject of religion. Religion is Not the fix our world needs. To join a church may provide enjoyable relationships to our lives and salve for our guilt but that act alone does nothing for our eternal heart. To be religious is not our goal.
We get distracted when we attempt to please God by our actions when we do religion. We continue to discover that religion has little to do with God’s primary concern of a pliable heart submitted to Him. Religion easily becomes ritual.
I own a copy of the New Testament that I received from my parents most likely before I could read. I own an old King James Bible that took me through my growing up years. In college, I learned versions other than King James exists. I now profit from various translations of Scripture.
Across these Holy Words the pulse of our Bible beats to over one thousand pages of history, stories, laws, and grace. Its words jump from the page into our hearts as we come to know God through the story of Jesus and the powerful daily presence we have through his Holy Spirit.
Even in our quest to comprehend scripture our understanding will always be limited as we try to understand eternal God. We will never conquer the entirety of our Bible. Thankfully, Jesus gives us the sum of
the entire Bible is two commandments. We only need to get two things right and both have to do with our eternal heart.
Love the Lord Your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and Love Your Neighbor as yourself (Luke 10:27).
The heart flow is what pleases the Holy.
I am impressed with Jesus’ heart concerns and connections described in the Gospels. One touching scene was the funeral procession led by the heartbroken widow of Nain. She grieved for the loss of her only son. I too have witnessed and felt her inexpressible sorrow. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry” (Luke 7:13).
I serve a Jesus whose heart is tender toward humanity. He wants my eternal heart to beat in rhythm with his. Jesus makes my heart the connection between the heart of the Holy and the heart of my neighbor.
To keep my heart aligned with the heart of Jesus will keep my heart aligned with God and with human need. It will also keep me from perpetuating the religion of rules and regulations. It’s not about my accurate comprehension of all details in Scripture. It’s not about a worship formula. It’s about the heart. Aligned with the heart of Jesus
my obedience will follow. It’s about my heart.
Yes, we have two hearts, one that keeps our body alive while on our earthly walk and the other keeps our soul alive in the present and in the eternal. That’s the one we want to keep healthy don’t you think?
It’s Jesus!
Stay tuned.
