GodReflection: Walking Into The Unknown.
Thunder in the desert! “Prepare for God’s arrival!
Make the road straight and smooth, a highway fit for our God. Fill in the valleys, level off the hills, smooth out the ruts, clear out the rocks.
Then God’s bright glory will shine, and everyone will see it” (Isaiah 40:3-5).
The older I get the more I marvel at the depth of Scripture. There is a dimension that continually intrigues me. It may not always be obvious. Yet I am often reminded anew, it was written to speak to the needs of all future readers.
Isaiah’s original message was to give hope for God’s repentant Israelite people scattered across the nations due to their former closed hearts of rejection.
Deeply and firmly, Isaiah plants hope into hearts for his time and for ours. Judgement has happened; lives submit to God in repentance. The people of Israel can now walk in trust into the unknown of their future.
When I come across the text cited above from Isaiah 40, I can’t help but hear echoes of Paul’s words to young
Timothy: Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Yes, every part of Scripture from Genesis through the prophets to the end of Revelation still has value today.
Just as in Isaiah’s time, a day will come for you and for me when God will Fill in the valleys, level off the hills, smooth out the ruts, clear out the rocks. Hope is planted firmly. God will level all our mountains.
Sure, I would love for that seed of hope to blossom now. Like us the Israelites wanted relief at once. Like them we live life one day at a time within God’s timing. However,
when those days seem unbearably long, what is important for you and for me is to water and nourish that seed of hope. The seed must be kept alive.
IT WILL HAPPEN. Just wait—God will level all our mountains. When King Jesus returns to finish his destruction of Satan and complete the job of his established reign over all, God will refurbish and restore his earth to perfection. That includes all our mountains.
Holy God (Father, Son, Spirit) will descend to sounds of
Thunder in the desert!
Each day, as we walk into the unknown, we walk in trust, we walk in hope. With great anticipation, I so envision the day when God will level all mountains. Hills of pain gone. Mountains of old age will disappear.
No more stories of crime, robbery, or vandalism. No more death hills. Holy God will be our sunlight and moonlight. No mountains to hide God’s light and his presence.
As we walk into the hidden unknown, we can be sure—it’s true, Just Wait—God Will Level All Mountains!
Stay tuned.
