Reflection Exertion

aboutI am living the Science Fiction of the 1950s. Moon launch computers are now antiques.

Encyclopedia salesmen went the way of the laundry rub board.

My dad—who died only eight years ago—never saw an iPhone or an iPad.

For speed, convenience, and the wow factor, what could be better than living today?

There is one major hole in the Science Fiction lifestyle.

God is lost in the process of making life convenient.

Some still give Him an hour during the weekend and call on Him like an Emergency Room in time of crisis.

Our God is now convenient.

If God is my religion, I can deal with Him like studying for an exam. I read about Him and make sure I know the answers.

reflectionIf God is my friend, He is going to take my time.

I see little in my modern world that encourages me to know God. To understand His purposes for humankind through Jesus and His church takes time and work.

It takes reflection exertion.

Simple religion works perfectly with the high demands of Science Fiction living. It leaves time for social media, music, movies, television, and travel.

However, if the script of reality and history has God at its core that is the exact part of my life I want to get right.

That will never happen if I live life at the surface.

chimpSeldom—if ever—has anyone mentioned to me the hard work it takes to know God. It involves reflection exertion.

To understand God is impossible. To know God is a grace only He can give. The good news is that is what He wants to do. He wants to give me grace. God desires that I know Him. I cannot know God on the fly.

I must spend time in Scripture. I must spend time in reflection about the meaning of the pain and struggles of my life. I must reflect on why God placed me exactly where He did and at this precise time in history.

I must understand His purpose in Jesus, the cross, the Spirit, and the church.

I want to grasp the perfect and beautiful church who is the bride of Jesus. I want to understand how much Jesus loves the local church and the great hope it carries to show the face and heart of the God of Love to a people filled with anxiety and desperation.

reflection2I want to understand how God wants to use me—a mere mortal—to work as His partner to be the eyes, heart, feet, and hands of Jesus Christ the Son of God.

None of this comes easy. It will take reflection exertion.

As I look toward the finish line, reflection time feels even more valuable. I also find the more I focus on the important the more I seek harmony with fellow Christ followers.

Will you share your tips for making time to reflect on the important?

Stay tuned. Gary J. Sorrells – Reflection on Cross Church.

  2. Thank you for this thoughtful article. I am reading A. W. Tozer’s, The Pursuit of God; it is thought-provoking and helps me on my journey to know Him more deeply.
