GodReflection: Power Words
Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you. – Psalm 9:10
More fortunate than most, my birth was into a trusting family. I hope I no longer take that blessing for granted.
Trust is a God word. For thousands of years of history Satan hasn’t honored it once.
My early trust relationships increased within a community of Christ followers. They were people worthy of trust. That doesn’t mean I never experienced a broken promise. Nor does it mean everyone always met expectations. My Christian community—like me, and all followers of Jesus—was imperfect.
The longer I live, the more I see the uniqueness of my early trust environment.
Broken promises penetrate our world like an influenza epidemic. For the vast majority trust doesn’t appear to be a word that will sustain weight.
God alone merits trust. He cannot lie.
I find my trust journey relates to God on three levels. All are a challenge for this flesh and blood human. I experience trust in the form of moon shots, muck, and the mundane. Let me explain.
Moon shot trust is the times I trust God for the extraordinary. I wish these occasions were in greater abundance.
These are the exciting times when I identify a way God might want to use me—even though the idea seems rather outlandish—and jump out in trust. I lament to not having the faith and the guts to make this more prevalent in my life.
I find I need trust to help me with a second set of circumstances. God provides trust power to get through the muck.
Once, while fishing on Williams Creek Lake in Colorado I took a shortcut across a muddy plain to reach the spot where the waters of Williams Creek entered the lake.
It was one of those deals where the farther I went the deeper became the mud. All that kept me moving forward was my unwillingness to retrace my steps. I kept thinking that what might be ahead of me couldn’t possibly be as bad as what was now behind.
In case you haven’t noticed—life is full of muck. Scripture declares, “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him.” Trust has powered me through a lifetime of Satan’s muck.
There are too few times when I trust God for the impossible. There are other times I trust Him when I am knee-deep in muck. However, a large portion of life is consumed by the day-to-day mundane. Trust is a power word to guide me through the ordinary.
The mundane includes my shower, breakfast again, errands, lunch, and another afternoon
and evening. It is not a time of flashing lightning bolts or a time when Satan’s darts are prevalent. I want to trust God in what I perceive as the mundane.
In the mundane, God’s presence is in the quite of the breeze. Never the less, it is a time to remember in the words of King David, “In you, Lord my God, I put my trust.”
Stay tuned.
