Light

GodReflection: Power Words

aboutThe beginning was darkness. “Darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”

I had no idea of the number of words that guide my walk with Jesus when I began this power word journey—I still don’t. I can’t believe it. I’m sixty-light13seven years old and had never thought about the importance of “Road-Sign” words that influence the quality of my life on earth and my place of residence in the next reality.

Sure, I live with decisions and concepts described by words that detect my lifestyle. Only in recent weeks has my awareness reached the level of an attempt to identify the words that have power because of God.

light7With eyes and ears now attune I have 110 power words on my list. Who knows, perhaps my list will grow to 150 or maybe the Spirit will lead me to discover I am powered by 220.

Light is commonplace. Those who disregard God receive the sun’s light. Many enjoy streetlights and home lighting. Cars come equipped with headlights, taillights, and interior lights. Sometimes, restaurants tone down the lights to create atmosphere. Light is so common we use dimmer switches to resist it.

light15When Jesus declared, “I am the light of the world,” his words fell upon ears and eyes that experienced precious little light. The sun of day, stars, moon, and flickering oil lamps defined light. When oil ran out dwellings were black dark.

Here is what I think.

I like to think of the evolution of modern lighting over my lifetime. Seventeen years prior to my birth, the entrepreneurs of minor league baseball had the crazy idea to play the game at night.

For the first game 12,000 fans came to a field in Des Moines, Iowa to watch their team—that normally drew 600 spectators—play a Western League team from Wichita. I wasn’t there to bear witness but I suspect the lights were less than adequate.

light5Today’s Halogen and LED lights in ballparks, airports, cities, and roads turn dark into light. Darkness is no longer a hindrance to the night. With the flip of a switch night can be as light as day.

There is a light not made by inventors and engineers.

I experience a definition and a dimension of light not known to others because I am a disciple of Jesus.

The light of Jesus shines on me to illuminate my walk by day and by night. Jesus came into this world to show me how to live with eternal light.

The Apostle John stands today as witness to an eternal light, “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind…This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.”

Jesus made the claim, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

It took me a while to see it–coming from my Baby Boomer work ethic–and to believe it. However, I now live in the comfort and truth of a statement John learned directly from Jesus, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”

It’s a solid decision to play ball under the power of eternal light.

Stay tuned.

  1. I walk into a room and flip a switch without even thinking. I take light for granted. I am ashamed to admit that all too often, I also take for granted the Light of the world. Thank you for this post, and for your Power Words, Gary.
