Path Words to the Holy: Expressive

GodReflection: Power Words

garyguarujaThe Expressive pathway like the Art pathway adds texture to the rest of us reserved Christ followers.

Those who walk the expressive pathway deserve my support not my judgment.  In many ways, God wired them as polar opposites to the way He designed me.

In comparison, I am as outwardly expressive as a brick wall.

expressive4They are vocal. They are the first in worship assemblies to say amen or shout out in agreement with God. They worship with their body. Bright smiles, raised hands, applause, and body posture are expressive of hearts attuned to God.

In the spirit of David—joyously following the Ark of the Covenant—they are obliviously to others as their worship gene is in full focus on God.

expressive11These people make me nervous. They aren’t like me. However, I’ll bet they bring joy to God’s heart and a smile to His countenance.

Shame on me when I express a verdict against a member of Jesus’ body for following the expressive pathway. For it is a pathway as natural to some as the thinker pathway is to me. They are God’s children following God’s wiring of their souls.

I stand ashamed on behalf of the rest of the church. I repent for the times we squeezed them from worship in our presence.  I am embarrassed for the times we used wrongly the “decency and in order” verse of the Apostle Paul to restrain the worship of the expressive.

expressive5I stand ashamed on behalf of the rest of the church. I repent for the times we promote division by driving from our fellowship those whose “sin” is that they love God, are eternally grateful for His grace, and express their gratitude with outward joy.

Father God,

Forgive me when I demand that others follow my wiring rather than follow their unique pathway to the Holy. The path that honors their personal gift received from you as Creator God.

expressive1Forgive me when I dishonor you by belittling anyone who worships you through the uniqueness of your special design.

Instead of being critical, may I catch a glimpse of your eternal fountain of joy from those on the expressive pathway.

I pray in the name of Creator God, Creator Son, and Creator Spirit.

Amen.

Stay tuned.

  1. YES! I remember a church leader’s stern disapproval (and a successful one) at ANY clapping in church and this was long after I was grown, with school-age children. Can you just imagine the reaction to the expressiveness you described in the congregation of our youth?? OK, that’s almost comical.
Again, thank you for these visits. I look forward to them.
