GodReflection: Power Word Wednesday

Sorry is a word to express repentance.

I can identify in a heartbeat when the shallowness of the word sorry flows from my tongue rather than from my heart.  Instinctively, when someone uses the sorry word with me, I have a good sense of its heart or tongue origin.

Sorry is more than the expression of repentance. Without sorrow, repentance is impossible.

Sorry is also a power word that evokes compassion.

I think of the record of the Queen of Egypt’s emotion upon discovery of baby Moses floating in a straw and pitch basket among the reeds of the Nile River. She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.

Thousands of years later, I feel the word sorry stir deep down in my gut each time I hear distressing news of little babies and children afloat in their proverbial reed baskets. Heartfelt sorrow is sometimes the only offering I can give.

At this point in my life walk, I’ve heard all of the wrong words people have used to comfort those who face loss through death. I do not stand guiltless in my own messed up attempts to comfort the hurting.

Here is what I’ve learned. It is never in bad taste to share a genuine, “I’m so sorry,” that comes from the heart. When I try to embellish a simple heart felt sorry is when I get into trouble by saying hurtful things void of truth.

God provides me a simple word of power.

When I used it wisely, whether in repentance or compassion, I minister to others and enrich both of our walks with the Holy.

Sorry is a word powered by the Spirit and turns out to be a word of power, don’t you think?
