GodReflection: Life in the Holy Presence

I find it easy to use Holy as both a noun and a pronoun when I refer to God, Son or Spirit. I have no difficulty with the use of Holy as a synonym for each member of the Trinity.

However, it seems natural to pause at the possibility of the use of the same word as a self-descriptor—even without the capital H.

To throw a quick pity party and compose the guest list from all of my weaknesses and defects is a great way to count the number of reasons I should never apply God’s pronoun to me.

But then comes the miracle.

It is the mind-boggling act of Father, Son and Spirit that changed the course of humanity.

Jesus come as God to earth for reasons beyond human comprehension to be sacrificed in death on a cross and raised as a human body to life eternal.

From that historical act, the Son of God provided Holy grace to stand in the place of all of my sin, weaknesses and ungodly characteristics.

It’s a gift free for the asking. It’s all mine when I acknowledge God as Father and Jesus as Lord.

In that act Jesus wraps me into the blanket of his Holiness. God now looks at me through Jesus-glasses and sees Holy Me because I am now claimed by Holy Jesus. Rather incredible isn’t it?

Then comes the second miracle.

It is the miracle of transformation. The closer I live to Jesus’ heart the more I start to reflect the Holy.

The Apostle Peter helps me move with confidence to claim holy as my label. I can only do so because of the grace that came my way through the cross-resurrection event.

Fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:13-16

So it is to this reality that I bring my “Pity Party”  guests to Jesus’ door.

As each one of my human defects and weakness come through the door the Holy Spirit anoints them with the perfume of grace.

And rather than my question “Me—Holy” ? . . .

I can claim holiness only because Jesus carries my sins and defects for me, since I accepted his invitation to walk under the shade of his Holiness.

I move with a confident step toward eternity as a holy citizen adopted by God into a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9.)
