GodReflection: Has God Noticed? The World Is In Chaos.
Have you noticed how smart we humans are? We define reality. We are scientist, historians, teachers, and entrepreneurs. We makes laws and set policy. We fill the roles of labor and service that makes life work. We define words and compose dictionaries. Should a word no longer serve, we mandate it to retirement. As our grandparents would declare, “aren’t we the cat’s meow.” I must switch gears before a lightning-bolt heads in my direction.
How is it with our abundant smarts, we cannot handle chaos? This morning the word covenant comes to mind. It is one of the words we retired. When was the last time covenant entered a conversation with a friend or a neighbor? I can’t remember its appearance in a newsfeed. Marriage covenants are referred to only on rare occasions.
It takes a journey into the pages of history or family lore to recall occasions when value was exchange through a vocal covenant made by two individuals and sealed with a handshake. There was a time when covenant was a recognizable word. I guess the word covenant is no longer useful.
Is it possible that throughout history The Holy continues a tug of war with we humans to remind us that covenant is God’s word and not ours to redefine? It is time to reinstate it in the vocabulary of our minds.
God’s covenant is a promise of Holy presence and of eternal care. It is a promise of love, compassion, and community. It is a partnership agreement. Our loyalty and love guarantees his presence to be closer than our own shadow in our daily walk.
It is seen in the protection covenant given Noah and in the promise of a God-nation given to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is a covenant of presence declared at Mt. Sinai, consistently reiterated by the prophets, lived through Jesus, and in the members of the early church.
Covenant is not the only word we have retired. Dare I suggest that over the past two hundred years, with the enlightenment and the scientific age, we smart humans retired God? He is no longer a conscious presence. We sent him to live in La-La Land. Other than in rough street language, or the use on signs to attack opponents, God is a retired word. Like covenant, news feeds, marriages, governments, and our street acquaintances seldom, if ever, speak of his relevance.
The chaos of our world should be sufficient to make the point. How often do those of us who claim allegiance to Jesus and the Holy Triad, catch ourselves making decisions without a prayerful God consultation? Do we let society’s pension plan for God creep into the reality of The Holy Presence our Creator wants to maintain with us?
May each of us make the effort to open our hearts and listen again to the promises and the words of The Holy. Let his words reassure us of his constant love, presence, and care, as we walk across this life. No, God does not live in La-La Land.
Listen to the covenant promises God makes to us. The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him (Nahum 1:7). “I will not leave you orphaned. . . you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. . . my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them” (John 14:18,20,23). Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people” (2 Corinthians 6:16).
I close with the account of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem just days before his crucifixion. Luke introduces
the scene with garments spread on the road in anticipation of what we now realize was nothing less than the act of God’s arrival as King of All Creation.
A portion of Luke’s description includes these words: When he came near. . .the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest” (Luke 19:36-38).
The entirety of Scripture gives testimony to both God and his covenant promises. When he came near neither he, nor his covenant to love and care for us amid chaos, moved to La-La Land.
Today, I want to remember the word of The Holy and realize once again that The Father, The Son, and The Spirit, are as close as the heart that beats in my body and the breath that fills my lungs. What do you think? Will you join with me in reaffirmation of his nearness to guide us through Satan’s chaos?
Stay tuned.
