GodReflection: Share It Again God The Nurturer.
Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. . .” (John 14:9).
I have no idea when I drank my first cup of coffee. It was at a very young age. I don’t remember life without its’ aroma at some point in my day. It was the social beverage of my childhood. The adults in my life started their day with mugs of hot coffee and enjoyed it throughout the day as they paused to converse with friends and transact business.
I count the brewed coffee bean as one of God’s generous gifts on planet earth. I have found it to fill in as a synonym for friendship. A coffee friend and colleague come to mind. He and I have sat across a table for five decades as we solved problems of the world, our lives, and the mysteries of the Holy. 
Surrounded by the aroma of brewed coffee neither of us need an agenda. Our two cups are in constant need of a hot refill. We converse with remarkable ease and a secure hold on the mugs with fingers and a thumb.
As I seek sustenance from God for my nutrition, what if I could more readily envision a conversation with Father and Son more like an invitation for coffee?
When I read the Four Gospels, I’m always struck by the ease with which anyone can talk with Jesus. Barriers of social class, profession, or race are nonexistent between him and others. The lack of formality is not an issue with Jesus when he is with men, women, children, or God the Father.
It is not insignificant that Luke describes Jesus’ growth as ‘in favor with God and men.’ Others were comfortable in his presence. It was easy to talk with Jesus. He was likable.
The four authors of the Gospels show us Jesus at complete ease in conversation with Father God. Their times together were the fuel Jesus needed for his daily walk as a man along the path where he encountered other men, women, and children to serve.
Jesus talked with God, and they were one. It was a oneness admired by his disciples. He talked to God, the Holy Father, who was invisible to the disciples. Though they were aware of this Holy God from childhood, they were more than intrigued as they witnessed Jesus call on his name to feed multitudes, to heal the sick, to cause blind folks to see, the lame to walk, and the dead to return among the living. When he called God listened. This is a God they wanted to see. I can only imagine their astonishment as they heard Jesus affirm to Philip, “anyone who has seen me has seen the Father”.
Shouldn’t that translate into my approach to my Heavenly Father? Even as I hold him in reverence and respect. It is as if Jesus invites me to the coffee table of God.
I leave encouraged after time spent with a friend over hot coffee. Our relationship has enriched me for the days ahead. Don’t you think that is just a small taste of what God wants for us in relationship with him? What if we envisioned time in God’s presence as coffee with the Holy?
