There Is A Better Way To Build Strength

GodReflection: How About A Better Way?

Many of us have fond and savory memories of our mother’s cooking. Sure, there were the sandwiches and the “thrown together” occasions just to provide. But it was always around a table filled with warmth and motherly love.

Then, there were the rich meals put together with skill and effort. Perfectly fried crispy chicken, mashed potatoes seasoned just right. Hot bread with butter, gravy, and the most outstanding pecan pies. Not to mention one of my favorite meals—stacked enchiladas. It was nutritious and tasty, yet there is a better way to build strength.

I recall my mother spoke about Humble Pie. Surely, she had a recipe. Someway, I failed to write down the exact ingredients. The result is I don’t always get Humble Pie right. I didn’t raid the fridge near often enough to look for it. Its taste is strange and foreign.

Humble Pie provokes a distinct reaction. The act of eating is distasteful. It is like placing half of a sour lemon in my mouth and chewing until I get it swallowed.

Certainly, Humble Pie isn’t the food I seek. However, the strangest thing happens once swallowed. My stomach—and my soul—feel calm and satisfied. It is as if the world is right. Strength increases with every step. I must be close to my original self as wired direct from God’s factory.

One thing I know. Humble Pie is not a staple included in the meals I eat as strength builders to better serve Jesus.

Here is what I think.

It is far too easy to be right from my point of view. I may think I honor God because I stand for truth when what I stand for is nothing more than my mistaken reality.

When I am a self-appointed model saint, I harm my relationship with God, His Son, His Spirit, His Church, and my colleagues whom I judge.

Then I hear the voice of Jesus. He speaks directly to me. I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your soul (Matthew 27:9). Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bear with one another in love (Ephesians 4:2).

And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross (Philippians 2:8). Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up (James 4:10).

The reassurance of his words continues.  Finally, . . . be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing (1 Peter 3:8-9).

Often, I wonder what my reaction will be upon my resurrection from death when I find myself face-to-face with Holy God. I suspect I will unwrap my final piece of Humble Pie.

I will lament my arrogance of what I thought I knew of God when living on earth. I will cry out in remorse of my judgmental spirit. I will see that I acted far too much from my earthly nature. I will repent of what I thought I knew prior to standing in the warm glow of Holy God.

With my unwrapped snack in one hand, I will have saved a super-sized lemon to help digest my Humble Pie. I will chew on it and gag it down with sobs of regret. God will see the blood of Jesus on me—He will extend to me His grace—and my soul will feel calm and satisfied.

God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit will lead me to the Celestial Banquet Table, abundant with Holy Delicacies. No longer will Humble Pie be offered, for I will be cleansed and whole never again will I taste sin.

All will be right in my renewed eternal world. I will experience my original perfect self, wired direct from God’s hand.

Let’s unite and demonstrate to our world this way of Jesus is the better way to build strength. Let’s exercise humility and serve all who cross our path.

Stay tuned.

  1. If we are faithful to Him, each of God’s children will be served our own slice of that humble pie, but if we are faithful to Him we will be welcomed into His heavenly abode.
