A New Day a New Hill

GodReflection: Walking Into The Unknown.

“Where is the God of justice?” (Malichi 2:17)

Light shining is not designed to be easy. From what I observe, it is not a task free of impediments done on the smooth, grassy plains, but rather with the dawn of each new day a new hill of challenges appears in our path.

It takes place in the dark of the unknown. Each new hill, if not conquered, blocks our Jesus-Light-Reflection.

So often, in that dark place as we grope for light, we find ourselves with the deep desire to shout out like the prophet Malichi, “Where is the God of justice?”

God wired each of us to be a light in a dark world.

Jesus calls us to be lights that shine, so others see good that reflects The Holy. Every day is a walk into the unknown that requires our trust in God. Think about it—no two days are exactly alike. Our new day will come with a new hill.

The hills are the work of Satan. He does not deal in justice—not now and not ever. He seems to enjoy the construction of steep hills with numerous barriers and obstacles. As his newly erected hill appears before me, the Devil must grin ear to ear—if he has ears.

Satan-hills result from the fall. There is never an easygoing one placed before us. Each comes with its own set of special difficulties. Every hill is created to draw our attention from The Holy. My human tendency is to tackle each hill with my own strength. The small voice from within morphs into a shout, “I can do this by myself!”

It’s time to get real. With the new day as our hills appear let’s stop and pray, listen for and to the voice of God. He is present to draw us to trust in His Restorative Kingly Rule. He longs for a different declaration, “We can do this together!”

Father, Son, and Spirit stand ready to use Satan’s hills to grow us more toward the Holy. Together, God and I can conquer each new hill as I take one more step toward the end when finally, hills will disappear, and God’s justice will prevail.

At the end of Jesus’s stay on earth, the Gospels tell the story of his climb up the hill as he returns to Jerusalem. The story moves toward a climax when he climbs Monte Olives for the last time.

There he will spend the evening in conversation with God while his closest friends fail to stand beside him. First, they will fall asleep when he needs them most, then they will desert him and flee.

Jesus’ time on the mountain is time he must have to prepare for the steepest hill of his life. He must climb his last hill on his way to crucifixion. But it was that hill that made it possible to level all the hills of Satan. It was that hill that made it possible for a new day when we will no longer have new hills.

Stay tuned.
